Peeking into the Nest

Last summer, we started our Peeking Into The Nest blog series with the intention of giving you a look at what happens behind the scenes at A Haven for both families and us! For this Peeking post, we’ll get a look at a typical day for our intern, Rosa. Rosa is pursuing her Masters of Social Work at The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice. She has been with us since this past August, and is wrapping up her time at A Haven at the end of this month.

She has brought a wonderful calm presence to our team and has been such an asset, serving in a number of different roles in her time with us - facilitating individual sessions, family groups, and school groups, while also contributing in the day to day functioning of a young nonprofit! Read along for a peek into our nest from Rosa’s point of view...

8:00am- wake up, shower, and get ready for the day!

10:00am- head to A Haven. I live in Delaware and like to leave early in case of traffic. I pass the time by jamming out to music, but lately I’ve been listening to podcasts.

12:00pm- School Session with three students at a local elementary school. As this was the first session, I spent a good amount of time getting to know each child to build rapport and introduce the topic of grief. They responded really well and were so open to sharing their grief stories. I can’t wait to meet with them again next week!

Once I arrived at A Haven, I debriefed with my supervisors about the session and ate my lunch. Today, I brought a salad and some cheese and crackers.

2:30pm- catch up on emails to colleagues and finalize details for the Animal Therapy Workshop I helped plan.

3:30pm- Prepare/plan for the individual and group sessions coming up.

4:30pm- Individual Session with 6-year-old girl. This will be my 6th session with her! Today, we read the book, “Samantha Jane’s Missing Smile” and completed an activity that is related to feelings. Success!

5:30- Dinner time! Today, I brought chili. Perfectly warm and cozy for this dreary, rainy day.

6:00pm- Zoom meeting with co-facilitators to go over the plan for this evening’s group.

6:30pm-8:00pm- Grandparent Loss Group (virtual). I led the icebreaker and closing and helped to facilitate the main activity along with the other interns and Group Lead. The kids created a memory box and shared some really insightful things that they intended to keep inside in honor of their loved one.

8:00pm- Debrief with co-facilitators and then drive home and go to sleep after a long but very successful day.

Rosa is ending her time with us at A Haven, but we are so grateful for what she brought to our Mission. Good Luck at your next internship placement, Rosa!
